New B&NES Service - A new Buddy’s perspective

Excitingly the new Bluebell Buddy service has now launched in Bath and North East Somerset!  There are 3 of us and the service is now running successfully and over eighty mums have already been referred and supported.

Setting up a new service can come with some challenges though – there are emails to be written and sent, face-to-face meetings, networking to be done and presentations to be given! Sometimes these can test personal boundaries, but when they are successful and result in a mum getting the help and support she needs, challenging yourself can be a really positive thing. We have already made excellent links with a range of health care professionals who are now referring mums into the service.

At Bluebell we all have lived experience of perinatal mental illness and, as a peer support worker, we have time. Time to listen without judgement. Time to work with a mum and work out the best way forward.  After an Initial Assessment, a Buddy can offer up to five listening visits, prioritising you and helping you find a constructive way forward.  We also have a range of services we can refer onto: art therapy groups, dance therapy as well as talking therapies and counselling. We’re already building up an invaluable set of resources to provide something that will meet the needs of each individual mum we meet and support.

After the birth of a child we can feel as though every single one of our boundaries is being tested. Life can feel as if it has been turned upside down. We may struggle with feelings of anxiety and low mood. We’re here to let parents know that they are not alone and asking for help is so important. You can self refer to Bluebell for support in B&NES, or you can be referred by your midwife, health visitor or GP. Have a look at our website for more information or call the office on 0117 922 0746 to find out more.
